Jan 19, 2018  Right-click on the Folder, File, or Application you'd like to create a shortcut for on the left side of the window. Select Make Alias. Click enter and drag the alias to your desktop. Use Automator to create a little stand-alone application to mount all your shares. Add this to your startup items and make a shortcut to it for the desktop so you can click on it if you reboot the machines with the mapped drives etc. Or make it a finder plugin so you can just select it from the contextual menu.

Getting Access to a Drive

• After being granted access to a drive, you must restart your computer before mapping a drive to it.
  If you are denied access to a drive, please restart your computer and try mapping it again.
• Authorizers can grant access to users via the Permissions Manager.
  Authorizers do not automatically have access, but they can grant access to themselves.

1. Open the Finder if it is not open already.

2. In the menu bar, click Go, then Connect To Server:

3. Type the address of the shared volume, or folder, you would like to mount, beginning with smb://. Then click Connect.

For example, if you are mounting your division's shared volume (G: drive) on the Research Data Storage (RDS) system, you might type smb://rds6/yourDivision-s :

4. Type the user name and password you use to log in to the Cincinnati Children's network, and click OK:

You should be connected to the location you typed in step 3, and a volume icon should appear on your desktop:

5. To create an alias of the volume so that you can easily reconnect without repeating steps 1-4 above, select the volume icon, go to the Finder menu bar and click File, then Make Alias:

A volume alias appears on your desktop:

In the future, you can reconnect to the shared volume by double-clicking this alias.

6. If you wish, rename the alias by clicking anywhere on the icon, then clicking the text beneath the icon. A textbox should appear, enabling you to modify the alias name:

OS X :: My USB Hard Drive Can't Be Mounted?

I have Seagate FreeAgent Go 250 GB USB Harddrive. I don't know why but I cannot access my drive. When i plug usb cable, nothing appears on desktop. Only Disk utility can see Drive. but it seems in grey font. when i click mount, it gives error that says repair disk. But when i start repair disk, nothing is happening. Progress bar is not moving. Just preparing bar like this

OS X :: How To Restrict Access To Mounted Drive To An Administrator Only

I have an external drive mounted via firewire and formatted with HFS.
I would like this drive to be accessible by an administrator, say admin, only and have used Finder to set permissions. So the user and group for the /Volume/<drive> is admin:admin.
I have created a standard user, say user. However I find that when the standard user logs in he can access the volume and the rights for the drive become user:user instead of admin:admin, so that drive is accessible by any login user no matter what permissions I set as an administrator.

OS X :: Disk Heartbeat While USB Drive / Card Mounted

I just noticed this strange thing a couple of weeks ago and just found the cause. Note I'm running a Mac Pro w/4 drives, 1 of which is dedicated Time Machine drive. Usually the system is dead quiet (disk activity as well) except when I am actually doing something or time machine is backing up. I have also noted what spotlight 'sounds' like when it's doing a background index. This 'heartbeat' is a click, click, thump, thump (I just used those terms to describe two distinct sounds, referring to disk access/seeking). It will do this forever every 2-3 seconds. I have closed everything, looked at activity monitor, quit things that I thought might be causing it with no help. Note with the 'thump' there is an ever so slight increase in 1 of the cpu monitors.
Anyway, tonight I just decided to dig more in to it. Because I have 4 drives I decided to at least dis-mount 3 of them to try to determine which drive was actually getting accessed. That's when I noticed I had a cf flash card mounted in my card reader. I dismounted that 1st and, well, the drive access stopped! I re-inserted it and it started up again. I inserted a different (SD instead of CF) card and it also started again. I've never noticed this before. What would be monitoring a mounted flash card? Further investigation revealed that it also does it with USB 'thumb' drives and USB 'hard' drives. BTW, I'm on 10.5.7 if that matters. Now that I know WHAT is wearing out my drive seek mechanism, I can stop it by ejecting any removable media!

I got this big hard drive and attached it to my Airport Extreme. I can get to it just fine, however, I would ideally like to make it so this drive is ALWAYS mounted on my computer. I've got my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on here, and it seems like every time I wake my computer or reboot, I need to reconnect to the drive, otherwise iTunes/iPhoto freak out because they can't find it. Is there a way I can tell my Mac to stay connected to the drive, and automatically look for it if it's not mounted?

One thing that has always bugged me about Mac OS is that when a network share becomes unresponsive or unavailable the shortcut on the desktop disappears and you get a glaring messaging that the share has been disconnected.Is there any way to prevent a network share from being removed just because it becomes momentarily unavailable?As an example, on a Windows machine the network share shortcut remains, you simply cannot use it but it is there and ready to go the moment the share comes back online. We have two suites of apple mac's and we have an apple server (mac mini) They are all running Mac OSX SL 10.6.8 Basically I'd like the server to add an icon to a network share onto each dock so that I don't have to visit each and everyone manually. The guy who used to admin the mac's has left so I'm left to learn everything mac and at present I can only basically use a mac (i'm keen and learning). He used to copy a link over manually somehow I don't know, but the file is a .app file which I believe he placed into the applications folder and ran it like that. I've tried this and it doesnt work. Also he has somehow locked the desktops down so that all the menus are greyed out. The 'Go' menu is completely greyed out. He's left instructions on how to unrestrict by using a specific username and password. Even under administrator they are unrestricted.Â

Unfortunately, after leaving our wireless signal and then coming back the time machine drive isn't automatically mounted since she isn't 'logging back-in'. I've recently installed a second hard drive in place of my SuperDrive and now use SSD as my OS drive and a regular hard drive for data. However, when running on battery I want everything I can squeeze out of my mac so I tend to dismount the drive when on battery power. Dismounting is easy, just right click and eject, but mounting it back requires going into Disk Utility. Is there a way I can place a shortcut to mounting the disk/write some script so I don't have to go all the way to Disk Utility? Even better, maybe there is a way to code a script that would automatically mount the disk when I switch from battery to AC?
